Schools with GRIT® Pearl Check-In Cards
Introducing the "Pearl Check-In" tool created by Schools with GRIT® (2026). This check-in was created by a school counselor and trauma-informed specialist as a way to support kids and turn GRIT into growth!
Avoiding the stigma and complicated zones, this check-in is developmentally-appropriate for all ages AND normalizes the need for self-awareness and healthy coping - a skill we all need.
It is designed as a visual aid for students to identify and communicate their current emotional state using a pearl metaphor.
The check-in is divided into two primary categories:
1. Pearl Shining (Green)
This represents a positive emotional state where the student is open and "ready."
- Visual: An open oyster shell with a glowing pearl and a "thumbs up" icon.
- Associated Emotions/States:
- Happy
- Calm
- Proud
- Ready to Learn
- A helper
- Kind
2. Pearl Forming (Yellow)
This represents a more difficult emotional state where the oyster shell is closed, suggesting the student is processing challenges.
- Visual: A closed oyster shell with a "clenched fist" icon.
- Associated Emotions/States:
- Stressed
- Sad
- Tired
- Mad
- Hyper
- Something else
